The EU countries that border Ukraine are currently open to the brutal Russian invasion.

Refugees can leave the country quickly and easily.

But that doesn't apply to everyone.

Abeerah Ahmad Khan, Pakistani medical student from Kiev

»They let out all Ukrainians first and only then other nationalities.

So we had to wait a very long time.

It was snowing and we had no place to sit.

We had to sit on the floor on a blanket, but it was already wet.

It was really horrible.'

Foreign students and workers who have previously lived in Ukraine have to queue separately.

In contrast to Ukrainian citizens, they are often stranded at the border with the EU.

And the problems begin for them on the way there.

Apparently, Ukrainians are also given preferential treatment on trains and buses.

Abeerah Ahmad Khan, Pakistani medical student from Kiev

»There were so many people, you couldn't find a place to stand.

And then there was shelling and everyone panicked and half the people ran away.

Some stopped to get on the bus, and then everyone just fought for a seat on the bus to Lviv.

My cousin was left and I cried and begged to let him come with me, but they wouldn't let him."

Many had to walk to the border.

Abdelhamid Ahmed, student from Egypt

»A lot of people simply want to leave here, not just Ukrainians, but also Egyptians and people from many other countries.

They were all walking in the street, there were so many people walking and it really wasn't an easy distance.

It was very, very tiring for us to walk that long distance, it was probably 40 or 45 kilometers.

If people from abroad wanted to ride the bus, they would have to rent it.

And the whole bus.«

The students' criticism is primarily aimed at the border officials - less at the Ukrainian population.

Abeerah Ahmad Khan, Pakistani medical student from Kiev

»The Ukrainians here in the village were really nice, they gave us food and they didn't care where we came from.

But at the border they preferred Ukrainian people and we had to wait longer than we should have waited because of racist people.«

Even the Ukrainian foreign minister has already intervened because of the problem at the borders.

He tweeted:

Tweet by Dmytro Kuleba, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine:

“Russia's invasion of Ukraine hits Ukrainians and non-citizens in many devastating ways.

Africans who want to leave the country are our friends and must be given equal opportunities to return safely to their home countries.«

So far, more than 500,000 people have fled Ukraine.

The UN expects several million people to flee to the EU.

According to the federal police, around 5,300 refugees from Ukraine have arrived in Germany so far.
